Pseudomonas putida has been show useful for the bioremediation of various xenobiotics, but there is little information related to its security to human health. It was investigated the effects of P. putida involved in the herbicide propanil biodegradation in rats, in order to evaluate possible toxicopathological effects promoted by the bacteria exposure. Rats were exposed at a single oral dose of 108 cfu mL–1. The animals were observed daily, not having clinical alterations at different intervals after the exposure. They were sacrificed and necropsied at these intervals and samples of various organs were removed to verify the bacteria presence on them. P. putida was not able to grow after 3 and 24 hours after exposure. However it was founded colonies of the agent 16 h after the exposure in lung homogenates. Confirmation of the diversity of bacteria was performed with the fatty acid methyl esters procedure. The protocol utilized showed to properly evaluate the security of this agent to mammals.
