Comparison of Particulate Suspended Matter (PSM) Effects From Different Pollution Sources on Chicken Egg Embryogenesis

Resumen

Airborn particles are due to adverse effects on health and may cause adverse fetal outcomes. The present study compares the embryotoxicity of the PTS (Total Suspended Particulate) from three different emitting pollution sources: São Paulo, Capital; Cubatão; and Araraquara. Chicken fertilized eggs were divided on: nontreatment control, PTS treated and positive control. The eggs were opened and analyzed the mortality rates and weight of the embryos. The mortality rates of the PTS treated eggs were the highest on Cubatão (41.7%) followed by Araraquara (37.5%) and São Paulo (9.1%) at 0.3 μg/L PTS dose (p < 0.05). The mean weight from hatching embryos were lower at Cubatão PTS treated when compared with São Paulo and Araraquara. These observations are supportive of the concept that not only the concentration of PTS interferes on embryo development, but also their components, therefore the highest mortality and the lower mean weight belong to Cubatão sample.
